Miami Airport


Miami International Airport alternates with JFK Airport in New York as the busiest international gateway in the United States, and is by far the busiest portal to and from Latin America and the only one with flights to and from Cuba. An airfield was built on the site 8 miles (13 km) northwest of downtown Miami in the 1930s and named for Congressman J. Mark Wilcox; it was taken over by the military during World War II and became a civilian airport in 1945. The twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota are served by Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport, which is on the Mississippi River about 10 miles (16 km) from the centers of both cities. Houston, Texas is served by two airports – its original municipal airport, named at various times for it first owner W.T. Carter, eccentric billionaire and aviation pioneer Howard Hughes and Texas Governor William P. Hobby, and Intercontinental Airport, renamed in 1997 for President George H.W. Bush. Hobby Airport was opened in 1927, was rebuilt in 1940 with an air terminal that is now a museum and lost its passenger air service in 1969 to the newly-opened and much larger Intercontinental Airport; domestic air traffic was restored at Hobby in 1971, and an international terminal is now being constructed. The facility has been ranked first in the country in customer service among smaller airports.
